Why are there still Palestinian Refugees?

Initially posted on Richard Falk’s site. In case he deletes here it is:

At least my friend Howard chose to give a proper introduction to the video you guy’s chose to label “propaganda”:
This is so well done and worth the 4 minutes. For those of you who have known this for years, the exact numbers are still very interesting. Please pass this on.

I have always found it amazing that the wealthy Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia will spend billions each year building mosques in Germany (80 this year) and paying the Saudi trained Wahabist/ Salafist/ radical imams of these institutions but will not spend a penny resettling these Palestinian Professional refugees within their own borders. Just look at Jordan whose population is over 80% “Palestinian” and they have never been granted citizenship. OK to work in the Victoria Secret factory in Jordan but not Arab enough to be granted citizenship. Remember that in 1922 Sir Winston Churchill gave Transjordan to the Hashemites to guard Mecca and Medina. However, they were driven out by the Saudis. Chaim Weizmann, the first Israeli President agreed to give 80% of the mandate land of the 1917 Balfour Declaration to the Jordanians in return for a written agreement to take care of the displaced Palestinians. Today Jordan is 83% Palestinian but they are still refugees without citizenship status.

With the recent holiday of Passover, it is important to remember the nefarious Grand Mufti of Jerusalem whose hatred of Jews was the prime incitement of the 1920 Passover riots in Jerusalem where many Jews were slaughtered. On April 4, 1920 during Passover in Jerusalem an Arab mob was whipped into a frenzy in the Nebi Musa mosque east of Jerusalem and for four days terrorized the residents of the old city, killing six Jews and injuring 200 others. The British were aware in advance of the attacks and stood by doing nothing to protect the Jews. Ze’ev Jabotinsky, who organized the defense of the Jewish quarter was arrested by the British and sentenced to a long prison term (but was soon released). This attack in 1920 signaled the beginning of organized Palestinian terror with its epicenter in the mosques. The first such clandestine organization was the Black Hand led by Syrian born Al- Qassam advocating for violent struggle to oust the British and eliminate the Jews, making way for a Greater Syria. Qassam was finally killed by the Brits. However, his example served as a role model… terror under the cloak of religion and recruiting from the lower class. This formula was replicated 60 years later by Hamas ( charter of 1983) to kill in the name of god. His influence was so widespread hence the naming of the infamous rockets which rain down on Israelis to this day (Qassam rockets) and the Al-Qassam Brigades of Hamas.

To appease the Arabs in 1921 Amin Al-Husseini was appointed by the British to the highest Muslim position in the land (the British were financially strapped after WWI) . Churchill was the Colonial Minister at the time for British Mandate Palestine. When the newly appointed Mufti asked Churchill to nullify the 1917 Balfour Declaration advocating the creation of a Jewish state in BM Palestine, Churchill flatly refused, stating that the 3000 years of Jewish presence in Jerusalem and the surrounding area made it logical fro this to be the Jewish homeland. With these words he echoes the declaration of Napoleon Bonaparte who, in 1799, after conquering the region of Acre, stated that the entire should be administered by the Jews, citing their 3000 years of continuous presence in this region. And let us not forget that On June 30, 1922 a joint resolution of both Houses of Congress in Washington DC endorsed a “ mandate for Palestine”, confirming the right of Jews to settle anywhere they choose between the Jordan river and the Mediterranean sea. From the River to the Sea really meant something different back then. This is the core legacy of support which our current president somehow fails to recall but will hopefully be better upheld by the next administration.

Another interesting tidbit….

“ Peace for Israel means security, and we must stand with all our might to protect Israels right to exist, its territorial integrity. I see Israel as one of the greatest outposts of democracy in the world, and a marvelous example of what can be done, how desert land can be transformed into an oasis of brotherhood and democracy. Peace for Israel means security and that security must be a reality. I solemnly pledge to do my utmost to uphold the fair name of the Jews, because bigotry in any form is an affront to us all.”

  1. Falk has finally figured out how to use the block device so I am happily disemburdened of him. Here for the record is the last of my deleted comments there:

    Find the difference:

    Walker Percy:

“Jewish people… have decided to bring down human civilization (like Sampson [sic]) rather than admit their perfidy in establishing a new crusader state in Jerusalem”; “this conflict is simply an artifact of Jewish neurosis.”

“It is this systematic indoctrination, the Jewish religion itself, which causes these problems, and probably always has”; “Israel itself is only the latest embodiment of this peculiarly Jewish neurosis, the mother of all self-fulfilling prophecies, and one of the greatest danger that human civilization has ever faced.”

“The jewish religion is nothing but a vast, loathesome ponzi scheme of shaming and coercion, whose practitioners will eventually be forced to renounce it.”

    Hitler:

Here he stops at nothing, and in his vileness he becomes so gigantic that no one need be surprised if among our people the personification of the devil as the symbol of all evil assumes the living shape of the Jew.

The Jew’s domination in the state seems so assured that now not only can he call himself a Jew again, but he ruthlessly admits his ultimate national and political designs. A section of his race openly owns itself to be a foreign people, yet even here they lie. For while the Zionists try to make the rest of the world believe that the national consciousness of the Jew finds its satisfaction in the creation of a Palestinian state, the Jews again slyly dupe the dumb Goyim. It doesn’t even enter their heads to build up a Jewish state in Palestine for the purpose of living there; all they want is a central organization for their international world swindle, endowed with its own sovereign rights and removed from the intervention of other states: a haven for convicted scoundrels and a university for budding crooks.

Around peoples who offer too violent a resistance to attack from within he weaves a net of enemies, thanks to his international influence, incites them to war, and finally, if necessary, plants a flag of revolution on the very battlefields.

In economics he undermines the states until the social enterprises which have become unprofitable are taken from the state and subjected to his financial control.

In the political field he refuses the state the means for its self-preservation, destroys the foundations of all national self-maintenance and defense, destroys faith in the leadership, scoffs at its history and past, and drags everything that is truly great into the gutter.

Culturally, he contaminates art, literature, the theater, makes a mockery of natural feeling, overthrows all concepts of beauty and sublimity, of the noble and the good, and instead drags men down into the sphere of his own base nature.

The end is not only the end of the freedom of the peoples oppressed by the Jew, but also the end of this parasite upon the nations. After the death of his victim, the vampire sooner or later dies too.

  2. Ira, re my “threat” to Prof. Falk, incitement to violence is a criminal offense in America. Talk about “taking action” coupled with Nazilike characterizations of Jews comes pretty close to it. Since a number of Prof. Falk’s admirers are clealy mentally unbalanced, one can assume that some of his readers are too, so who knows how they will respond to the Jewish threat to “bring down civilization.” I take all the wild talk on his website very seriously, knowing what it can lead to, and I would like Prof. Falk to give it some thought as well.

  3. Ira, good morning

Re your exchange with Prof. Falk. I think your idea of symmetry between Hamas and settler intransigence is off the mark, just as Prof. Falk’s idea of asymmetry is.

Terrorist violence as such is not a response to the existence of settlements or their perceived expansion though specific acts may be undertaken for a variety of reasons including Israeli actions. Terrorist violence is a strategy and its aim is to undermine Israeli morale with the end of eliminating the State of Israel. To this end, with its very Eastern concept of time and reality, Hamas is prepared to wait 100 years.
The idea that Hamas would give up its ambition to destroy the State of Israel, which is rooted in religious ideology, mandated by Allah, is as unlikely as the idea that Orthodox jews (specifically the national-religious camp) would give up its claim to Judea and Samaria, also mandated by God. The difference is that Hamas has it in its power to overrun any Palestinian state that comes into being while Israel’s religious right will never be strong enough to obstruct a final settlement.

  4. Good morning, Ira

I’m following your exchange with ray, Look to him now to come up with two sentences telling us he loves Jews, followed by something lifted from Haaretz talking about Israeli fascism, rounded off with a bit of Isaiah.

I think almost all harsh criticism of Israel reflects Jew hatred. The wild, unbalanced language is always the giveaway, plus a readiness to spend hours combing the Internet for the smallest crumb of anti-Israel opinion. Few Jews, however, should be defined as antisemites. Walker Percy and Schulman are self-declared exceptions. The others display a typical pathology, more self-loving than self-hating, intimidated and threatened by the existence of Israel as a kind of emblematic authority figure (just as they are threatened and intimidated by the authoritarianism of Orthodox Judaism) and resenting it deeply for its implied demand that they come out of their comfort zones and assert themselves as Jews. Prof. Falk belongs to the latter category in my view.

  5. Here is my reply to Brewer on Falk’s General Golan piece:

According to your new findings, how many cases of Israeli rape were here in 1948?

“About a dozen. In Acre four soldiers … ”

According to your findings, how many acts of Israeli massacre were perpetrated in 1948?

“Twenty-four. In some cases four or five people were executed, in others the numbers were 70, 80, 100. There was also a great deal of arbitrary killing. Two old men are spotted walking in a field – they are shot. A woman is found in an abandoned village – she is shot. There are cases such as the village of Dawayima [in the Hebron region], in which a column entered the village with all guns blazing and killed anything that moved.

This is bad enough but compared with other armies the Israelis are absolute angels. No, this is not a pattern. 100,000 German women raped by the Russians is a pattern. You are trying too hard to liken Israelis to Nazis.

All of this is from Benny Morris so you should also be telling us that that according to him Arabs were not only expelled but fled on their own or were told to flee by their leaders. He estimates that the expulsions constituted the smallest number of the three causes of flight among the 700,000 refugess. And I will point out to you that the Israel was at war with the Arab nation and the displacement of nearly a million Jews from Arab countries was part of this war and constitutes a de facto population exchange identical to the one between Pakistan and India, whether you like it or not. And as long as you insist on ignoring the Arab invasion of Israel with the declared aim of destroying it you are willfully presenting a distorted picture of the conflict. Whatever Ben-Gurion may have dreamed about at night, the fact remains that Israel agreed to the partition plan and was willing to live with it. The Arabs were not and chose to fight it out.

  6. I offer this to anyone interested in replying to Laurie on Falk’s “General Golan” post.

“No one calls critics of Israel “little Hitlers.” It is people who talk about Jews “deciding to bring down civilization” and the Jewish religion as “loathsome” who are called little Hitlers.

The Jews also wanted “more than health care.” That’s why a compromise was offered. The Jews accepted it, the Arabs rejected it and chose to fight it out.”

I would be happy if all the above found some expression in replies to the Falk crowd but as it doesn’t and as there isn’t any interaction here, I will be dropping out.
